Ingredients
– 1 cup split yellow lentils (dal)
– 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
– 1 tablespoon salt
– 2 cups whole wheat flour
– 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
– 1/4 cup ghee or unsalted butter
– 1/2 cup water
– 1/2 cup jaggery (or brown sugar)
– 1/4 cup milk
– 1 tablespoon cardamom powder
Method
1. Start by cooking the split yellow lentils in a pot with 4 cups of water. Add turmeric powder and salt. Boil until soft, around 20-25 minutes.
2. While the lentils cook, make the dough for baati. Mix flour, baking powder, and ghee in a bowl. Add water gradually until a smooth dough forms.
3. Shape the dough into golf ball-sized balls. Preheat an oven to 200 degrees Celsius. Place baatis on a baking tray and bake them for 30 minutes or until golden brown.
4. For the churma, break baked baatis into small pieces. Mix them with jaggery, milk, and cardamom powder in a bowl and combine well.
5. Serve dal hot with baati on the side and churma for a sweet finish.
