Ingredients
– 1 cup red gram dal
– 1 tablespoon oil
– 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
– 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
– 2 dried red chillies
– 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
– 1 medium onion, chopped
– 2 tomatoes, chopped
– 2 cups water
– Fresh coriander, for garnish
Method
1. Rinse the red gram dal under cold water until it runs clear. Add the dal to a pot with 2 cups of water and cook until soft. This takes about 20 minutes.
2. Heat oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the mustard seeds and let them pop. Then, include the cumin seeds and dried red chillies.
3. Mix in the chopped onions and sauté until they become translucent. Next, add the chopped tomatoes and turmeric powder. Cook until the tomatoes are soft.
4. Pour the cooked dal into the pan and stir well. Simmer for about 5 minutes to combine all the flavors.
5. Serve hot, garnished with fresh coriander. This dish goes well with rice or bread.
