Karnataka Style Sandige Huli Recipe
(Toor Dal Dumplings in Gravy)

Ingredients
1 cup toor dal (split pigeon peas)
1 teaspoon turmeric powder
1 tablespoon oil
1 medium onion, chopped
2 tomatoes, chopped
2 green chilies, slit
1 tablespoon tamarind paste
1 teaspoon jaggery or brown sugar
Salt, to taste
4 cups water

Method
1. Soak the toor dal in water for at least 2 hours. Drain the water and blend the dal with turmeric powder until smooth.
2. Heat oil in a pot over medium heat. Add the chopped onions and sauté until they turn golden brown.
3. Stir in the chopped tomatoes and green chilies. Cook until the tomatoes soften, about 5 minutes.
4. Add the tamarind paste, jaggery, and salt. Pour in 4 cups of water and bring to a boil.
5. Form small dumplings from the dal mixture and drop them into the boiling gravy. Let simmer for 15 minutes until dumplings are cooked through.
