Delicious South Indian Sorakkai Kootu: Bottle Gourd Lentil Recipe

Ingredients

4 cups bottle gourd, peeled and diced
1/2 cup lentils
1 tsp turmeric powder
1 tsp mustard seeds
2 tbsp oil
1/2 cup grated coconut
2-3 green chilies, slit
Salt to taste
1/4 cup water
1 tsp cumin seeds

Method

1. First, rinse the lentils well in water. Then, boil them in a pot with 3 cups of water and turmeric powder until soft. Drain and set aside.

2. Next, heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds and wait until they start to pop. Stir in cumin seeds and green chilies for a few seconds.

3. Add the diced bottle gourd to the pan. Cook it for about 10 minutes until tender, stirring occasionally.

4. Combine the cooked lentils with the bottle gourd. Mix everything together, adding grated coconut and salt to taste. Pour in 1/4 cup of water and let it simmer for 5 minutes.

5. Serve hot with rice or bread.
