Ingredients
1 cup split yellow lentils (dal)
3 cups water
1 medium onion, finely chopped
2 medium tomatoes, chopped
2 green chilies, slit lengthwise
1 teaspoon ginger-garlic paste
1 teaspoon turmeric powder
2 tablespoons oil
1 teaspoon cumin seeds
Salt to taste

Method
Rinse the lentils under running water until the water runs clear.
In a large pot, combine the lentils and water. Bring to a boil, then lower the heat and simmer until the lentils are soft.
In a separate pan, heat the oil. Add cumin seeds and let them sizzle for a few seconds.
Add onions, green chilies, and ginger-garlic paste. Sauté until the onions are golden brown. Then, add chopped tomatoes and turmeric powder. Cook until the tomatoes soften.
Mix the onion-tomato mixture with the cooked lentils. Add salt to taste, and stir well. Adjust water to reach your desired consistency.
