Ingredients

Method
1. Melt the butter and olive oil in a large pot over medium heat.
2. Add the sliced onions and sugar. Cook them for about 30 minutes, stirring often, until they are golden brown.
3. Stir in minced garlic and thyme, cooking for 2 more minutes.
4. Pour in the wine and broth, then simmer for 20 minutes.
5. Serve soup in bowls with a slice of toasted French bread on top, then sprinkle cheese over the bread.
