Ingredients
500 g lamb or beef, cut into pieces
1 cup lentils, rinsed
1 large onion, chopped
2 tomatoes, chopped
4 cloves garlic, minced
1 inch ginger, grated
1 teaspoon cumin seeds
1 teaspoon garam masala
1 tablespoon oil
4 cups water
Method
1. Heat oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them sizzle for a few seconds.
2. Stir in the chopped onion and cook until golden brown. This usually takes about 5 minutes.
3. Add the garlic, ginger, and chopped tomatoes. Cook until the tomatoes soften and mix well.
4. Add the meat pieces to the pot and brown them for about 5 to 7 minutes. Then mix in the rinsed lentils and water.
5. Bring to a boil, then cover and simmer. Cook for about 40 minutes or until the meat and lentils are tender. Stir in garam masala before serving.
