Delicious Chainsoo: Traditional Uttarakhand Black Gram Recipe

Ingredients

– 200 g black gram (urad dal)
– 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
– 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
– 1 onion, finely chopped
– 1 teaspoon ginger, grated
– 2 green chilies, slit
– 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
– 1 teaspoon coriander powder
– 1 teaspoon garam masala
– Salt to taste

Method

1. Rinse the black gram in water and then soak it for about 6 hours or overnight.
2. Drain the water and blend the soaked black gram into a smooth paste.
3. Heat oil in a pan over medium heat and add cumin seeds until they crackle.
4. Stir in chopped onions, ginger, and green chilies. Cook until the onions turn golden brown.
5. Add the black gram paste, along with turmeric, coriander powder, garam masala, and salt. Cook for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
