Caramelised Onion Tarte Tatin Recipe
Ingredients
– 500 g onions, sliced
– 50 g unsalted butter
– 100 g brown sugar
– 1 tsp balsamic vinegar
– Salt to taste
– Black pepper to taste
– 1 sheet puff pastry
– 1 egg, beaten
– 1 tbsp fresh thyme leaves
– 1 tbsp olive oil
Method
1. Preheat your oven to 200°C.
2. Melt the butter in a large ovenproof skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook until they become soft and golden brown, stirring occasionally.
3. Sprinkle the brown sugar over the onions, then add balsamic vinegar along with salt and pepper. Cook for a few more minutes until the mixture is caramelised.
4. Roll out the puff pastry and place it on top of the onions in the skillet. Tuck the edges down around the onions. Brush the pastry with the beaten egg.
5. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until the pastry is golden brown. Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before flipping it onto a plate.
