Authentic Oriya Dalma Recipe: Lentils With Vegetables & Papaya

Ingredients

– 1 cup lentils
– 1 cup raw papaya, diced
– 1 medium potato, diced
– 1 carrot, diced
– 1 tablespoon mustard seeds
– 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
– 2 tablespoons oil
– 4 cups water
– Salt to taste
– Fresh coriander for garnish

Method

1. Rinse the lentils with water and set aside.
2. Heat the oil in a pot, then add mustard seeds. Once they pop, add the diced papaya, potato, and carrot.
3. Stir in the turmeric powder and salt. Cook for a few minutes until the vegetables are slightly soft.
4. Pour in the rinsed lentils and water. Bring the mixture to a boil and then lower the heat. Simmer until the lentils and veggies are fully cooked, about 25-30 minutes.
5. Garnish with fresh coriander before serving.
