Delicious South Indian Sorakkai Kootu: Bottle Gourd & Lentils Recipe

Ingredients

– 1 medium bottle gourd, peeled and diced
– 1/2 cup split yellow lentils
– 1 medium onion, chopped
– 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
– 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
– 1 tablespoon oil
– 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
– 2 green chilies, slit
– Salt to taste
– 2 cups water

Method

1. Heat the oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the mustard seeds and cumin seeds. They will start to sizzle.
2. Once the spices pop, add the chopped onion and green chilies. Sauté until the onions are translucent.
3. Stir in the diced bottle gourd, turmeric powder, lentils, and salt. Mix well to combine all the ingredients.
4. Pour in the water and bring the mixture to a boil. Reduce the heat and cover the pot. Cook for about 20 minutes or until the lentils and gourd are soft.
5. Turn off the heat and let it sit for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy it warm with rice or flatbread.
