Ingredients
1 cup toor dal
2 tablespoons oil
1 teaspoon cumin seeds
1 onion, chopped
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 teaspoon ginger, grated
2 tomatoes, chopped
1 teaspoon turmeric powder
Salt to taste
4 cups water
Method
Rinse the toor dal under cold water until the water runs clear.
Heat the oil in a pot over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and fry for a minute until fragrant.
Stir in the chopped onion, garlic, and ginger. Cook until the onion becomes soft and translucent.
Mix in the tomatoes, turmeric powder, and salt. Cook this mixture for about 2-3 minutes until the tomatoes soften.
Add the rinsed dal and water. Bring everything to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for about 30 minutes or until the dal is soft.
