Chinese Braised Pork Belly (Hong Shao Rou) Recipe & Tips

Ingredients

– 800g pork belly, cut into pieces
– 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
– 4 tablespoons soy sauce
– 2 tablespoons rice wine
– 2 tablespoons sugar
– 1 cup water
– 3 slices ginger
– 2 cloves garlic, smashed
– 2 spring onions, chopped
– 1 star anise

Method

1. Heat the vegetable oil in a large pan over medium heat.
2. Add pork belly pieces and cook until they are browned on all sides.
3. Stir in soy sauce, rice wine, sugar, water, ginger, garlic, and star anise.
4. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat to low and cover the pan.
5. Simmer for about 1 hour, or until the pork is tender. Garnish with spring onions before serving.
