Ingredients
– 1 cup toor dal (pigeon peas)
– 4 cups water
– 2 medium tomatoes, chopped
– 1 medium onion, finely chopped
– 1 tablespoon sambar powder
– 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
– 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
– 1 tablespoon tamarind paste
– 2 tablespoons oil
– Fresh coriander leaves, for garnish
Method
1. Rinse the toor dal under running water and then soak it for 30 minutes.
2. Cook the dal with 4 cups of water and turmeric until soft, either in a pot or a pressure cooker.
3. In a pan, heat oil over medium heat. Add mustard seeds and let them pop, then stir in onions and tomatoes. Cook until the onions are golden.
4. Mix in the cooked dal, sambar powder, tamarind paste, and salt. Simmer for 10 minutes, adding water for your preferred consistency.
5. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot with rice or bread.
